Lost your phone? No problem. You can reconstruct any password with pen and paper. Follow the 6 steps below using your PIN, passphrase, and the 4-letter cue for the service.
First, find the first occurrence in your passphrase of the first letter of the cue. Then, skip letters based on the first digit of the PIN. The next 3 letters become the first 3 letters of your password.
Next, find the first occurrence of the second letter of your cue (starting after the 3 letters from part 1). Skip letters based on the second digit of your PIN. The next 3 letters are added to your password.
Repeat for the third letter of the cue and third digit of the PIN. If the letter isn't in your passphrase, go to the next letter of the alphabet until you find one that is.
Repeat for the fourth letter. Again, cycle through the alphabet if needed. The next 3 letters found are the last letters of your base password.
Finally, capitalize letters 6 through 8, add '1a' after the letters, then add the special character for that cue to the end.
If you need to adjust for length requirements, either remove letters from the back of the 12-letter piece until you hit the maximum, or keep adding 'a' at the end until you hit the minimum.
